MeLUG IRC Channel FAQ

Question 1: What irc clients are there to download?
Answer: Windows - Mirc, pidgin, X-Chat for windows
Linux - X-Chat, Pidgin, bitchx, ircII, epic, irssi, weechat

Question 2: What is the irc server and channel for MELUG?
Answer: The server is hosted by FreeNode. The default server address is irc.freenode.net. You may want to pick a server closer to you. Check their site for server listings. The MeLUG channel is #melug.

Question 3: How do I join the server and channel?
Answer: Here are the steps:
1. Type "/nick yournicknamehere" (without quotes).
2. Type "/server irc.freenode.net".
3. Type "/join #melug".

Question 4: How to I reserve my nickname to prevent others from using it when I am offline?
Answer: You need to register your nickname with NickServ. To do this, pick the nickname you want to use, then type "/msg nickserv register passwordhere". This will register your nick with a password you select. The next time you log into the irc server you will need to identify yourself to NickServ. To do this, type "/msg nickserv identify passwordhere".
